General Forum Rules
These are rules that apply to someone posting on the out of character boards or generally talking to people out of character on our site anywhere else.
1.Be polite. Debate is okay. Making friends is encouraged, but have some common decency. We won't ban people for not liking the same things as other people or for trying to debate in a civil manner, but being a troll or starting a flame war, or any other general douchbaggery will result in disciplinary actions of the not-fun kind.
2.The founders of this site are by no means sticklers for censorship. We're not gonna get our panties in a bunch over people using 'bad words.' This is a Deadman Wonderland RP site for God's sake. If you can't handle foul language, you're not mature enough to be reading DW anyway. That being said, you must also not go out of your way to be vulgar or nasty. That's equally or even more so immature than getting offended over a bit of bad language.
3.Stay active. We understand that in the beginning things will be slow. We also understand that some people can't constantly be online and that's perfectly fine, but a bit of constancy and activity is needed on everyone's part to get and keep this site up and running. Inactivity results in a lack of candy, and without candy, continued posting is impossible.
4.Please don't be a whiner. There might be some instances where a mistake in judgement was made on part of the Administrator, and it is perfectly okay to have the other Admin review the choice and give their own judgement, but if they agree with the choice that was made, don't continue to complain. This will not give you what you want. This will only irritate the Administrators and potentially result in further disciplinary actions, again, of the not-fun kind. Simply accept the warning or other punishment and try to learn from your mistake and improve.
Role Playing Rules and Tips
These rules and tips are to help you post quality RP material and ensure that everyone is having a good time and no one feels disappointed in the quality of the work posted here. It can also be used as a guide to people that might be new to literate role playing.
1. Posts should be written in paragraph format. Think about it as though you were writing a book, not a screenplay.
Example:
Dissir stood at his nightly post, the cold metal of his armor the only thing keeping him from drifting off to sleep. No one would ever cross into the city at these hours, and yet the king insisted that the castle walls be guarded 24/7. What was it that he feared would occur in the wee hours of the night? Perhaps it was the crowning of a new king in the neighboring city? Rumors held that it was the Mad Prince Alderon that had taken the throne in favor of his brother, Asmodius. Just as his eyes began to slide shut, he was jarred awake by the voice of his comrade. "Hey, you still up over there? No sleeping on the job." "...Right..."
What not to do:
Dissir: *standing at his post sleepily thinking to himself*
Guard: Hey, you still up over there? No sleeping on the job.
Dissir: ...Right...
2. Post length does not necessarily translate to post quality. However, to avoid people skimping out on post length, leaving other RPers with not much to go on and a slew of miscommunications and misunderstanding during important scenes, a minimum of one paragraph containing five full sentences is required. Try to include detail about the character's actions and thoughts to add length as well as to help other RPers understand and fill in details like how you character says or does something. There's a huge difference between a giddy smile and a sinister grin. There is no maximum post limit.
3. All posts should be written in third person. This means that you would write as a narrator talking about your character's action, not talking as though you yourself was the character. Use pronouns like 'he' and 'she' instead of 'I' and 'me.' This is just good standard practice for RPers, especially when one person might control more than one character at a time. It is also recommended that posts be written in the past tense, using verbs like 'ran' and 'walked' rather than present tense like 'runs' and 'walks.' This is strongly preferred, although if you cannot write in past tense, we will be tolerant. However, inconsistent switching between the two will not be tolerated.
4. Try to use proper spelling and grammar. People will mess up on spelling. It's just going to happen. Minor errors are alright. No one is perfect. However, this site does have a spell check feature so we encourage you to get rid of as many red lines as possible before posting. Remember to use commas and semi-colons where they're needed as well as using quotation marks when a character is talking. Try to avoid run on sentences or sentence fragments. Recurring instances of multiple spelling and grammar errors will result in warning. Remember the different meaning of words like: your and you're; their, there, and they're; and two, to, and too.
5. No God-Modding or consistent post alterations. You cannot ever take control of someone else's character and have them do anything. If you throw a punch, it should be "He attempted to hit the bitch in the face." not "He hit the bitch in the face." That allows for a chance of rebuttal. Also, be realistic. Your character, no matter how awesome, will not be a flawless fighter. They will get hit, they will get hurt. You are encouraged to run a fight RP like you want to win, but keep in mind things like position, reaction times, weaknesses of both parties involved. No one should come out of a fight completely unharmed unless there are extreme circumstances, like one character is just completely blindsided by an opponent far above their level. Even then, they might get a lucky hit. Also, no jumping out of character and requesting to change something a character did to make things go the way you wanted. Take it in stride. This is only alright in the event that your post was worded so that what you were actually trying to say was lost in the error, such as accidentally putting "did" instead of "didn't." Instances of God-Modding, unfair fighting, or jumping out of character to change a post will result in warnings or further action depending on the level of severity.
6. No OCs can be made that are relatives or past friends of canon characters. This is considered non-canon and won't be approved as an OC by our Admin. You can and are encouraged to have your OCs interact with canon characters and make current friends, they are just not allowed to have past relationships with canon characters. OCs may be related to or have a history with other OC's pending approval of the creator of the OC.
7. Keep characters consistent. If you have a set and established character, do NOT change them, in appearance or personality unless it's something that happens in the RP, like getting a prison tattoo or cutting their hair. Even the most insane person will have certain triggers and set behavior. If your character is shy and docile, keep them that way unless there's a reason for it. (Think like Minatsuki.) If you are caught altering your character or RPing a character in a very non-consistent way, you will be given warning. If you cannot see what you have done wrong, you can always ask an Admin or anyone else with more experience in RPing and creating OCs to try and help learn to correct these kinds of mistakes. With that said...
8. Know how to RP mental disorders. This is a personal pet peeve of Diritus. Do a little bit of research. Find a name for the disorder. Maybe you don't have to just downright state "this OC has (blank) disorder." But you can still have them present symptoms. Look up a few mental disorders, find out how they present themselves and how they actually work. Don't just say "He's a psycho" and have him do all kinds weird random shit. Even crazy people have set triggers and behaviors and in fact, often have very specific triggers and abnormal behavior. Take their past into consideration when thinking about how they act. If they are abnormal, find out what the breaking point was. What happened? This is Deadman Wonderland. We are expecting some messed up characters. However, there is a right and wrong way to do it, so please try to do it right. It wouldn't kill you to skim the DSM. If you want help or are called out for poorly RPing a mentally ill character, please consult Diritus or Astrid on better ways to do it.
9. People have the natural urge to have sex. That is a fact of life. If you want your characters to be more real, it might be reasonable to find romance even in a place like DW. However, not everyone is going to want to read that. We request that sex be kept to 'private' threads, like characters' rooms....And in all honesty, keep your characters IN CHARACTER while having sex. If you're gonna do it, do it right. Don't become generic just because it's sex. Different people like different things.
Candy
Candy is awarded via participation in Administrator Sponsored Events, winning the Carnival Corpse, bought from the CP shop, as well as in other very specific instances that might come up. Right now, given the lack of membership, consider your candy unlimited. However, once candy is instated, one candy will be consumed every two weeks to promote activity and participation amongst members. Failure to have any candy after your final two weeks results in the inability to post in character (though you may still post in the out of character corner) until you buy candy or sign up for the next administrator event.
CP (Cast Points)
Cast Points are earned similarly to candy, via participation or victory (depending on the event) in Admin Events, winning the Carnival Corpse, or also may be allotted in small amounts for people going above and beyond their normal role as an RPer, such as for showing a high level of RPing skill, aiding another member to improve their skill, giving a good suggestion on the suggestions board, or otherwise assisting the Admin in some substantial way. These can be eventually spent on items for your characters. In fact, right now, a good way to earn some CP might be to make good suggestions about what you can buy with your CP.
If anyone has any questions, feel free to post them here or contact one of the Administrators.
